Hrithik Roshan’s uncle, music composer Rajesh Roshan, worked with the some of the biggest singers in history during his career. In an interview with Radio Nasha, he shared an interesting anecdote about Lata Mangeshkar, revealing how she had refused to sing the song “Ye Raatein Nayi Purani” from the film Julie. He shared, “When she retired, she called me and thanked me for ‘Ye Raatien’. I remember she had cancelled the song early morning and later didn’t give dates. She asked me to get someone else to sing the song, everybody wanted her to sing this, but she was very concerned about preserving her voice.”

He continued, “I went to Film Center and Kalyanji Bhai was recording there. She had told me that if she finished Kalyanji’s song on time, then she would sing for me.”

“I had to buy a music track and keep it, I was very disappointed that it was my first or second film and Didi didn’t come. Kalyanji bhai told me that her throat was sore. But, seeing me so disappointed, he agreed to bring her with him. From the Film Center, we reached Famous Studios, it was hardly a two-minute drive. The song dubbing started, she began to sing and I was very puzzled. I had purchased a music track and kept it, so it kept bothering me that my song was messed up,” Rajesh added.

He continued, “When I brought the song home, Rakesh was somewhere nearby and he came to the music room. He heard the song and sat in awe, then I realised she had sung so well. Ye Raatein was so beautifully picturised.”

Rajesh also spoke about how Lata Mangeshkar sang “Julie Loves You” without any reservations. “‘Julie Loves You’ was just an ordinary song, it was Lataji who elevated it. Until then, she had never sung a word in English, we didn’t have to get permission from her to make her sing Love You. The way she sang that song was so intoxicating, both she and Kishore Da kept working on it and some amazing pieces came out,” he said.

Rajesh Roshan was last seen on Netflix India’s docu-series The Roshans.
