Gurdas Maan: I try to make music that motivates
Gurdas Maan said, "When I write, I always add emotions and try to incorporate and highlight some or the other social message for society."

“Everyone has ideas but only a few make them a reality and rarely do you find people who make it their habit to do good deeds,” says Gurdas Maan, for whom singing live on stage is all about performing from the soul. “When you relate to the audience and they appreciate and request for their favourite tunes, it adds to the flavour of the performance,” says Maan. In Chandigarh for the Jiyo Dil Se Awards, we have a quick Q&A with the living legend.
A lot of Punjabi singers like Harbhajan, Hans Raj Hans, are weaving in a message against the drug menace. Are you too?
When I write, I always add emotions and try to incorporate and highlight some or the other social message for society. Songs like ‘Cycle’ and ‘Roti’ and ‘Boot Polish’ were about healthy living. These are just a few examples, there were many more.
How does a song help in social work?
These days people listen to songs from their hearts and not just ears. I always try to incorporate or add something to my music which strengthens their thinking and motivates them to be better human beings and take a positive steps towards humanity.
Any new film or album you are working on?
There is no plan for a movie as of now but I expect to launch a new album in April. We are still working on it and the title will be decided soon.
You’ve had a rich career. Any plans of putting it all in a biopic or a book?
While a lot of people have already written books about me, I personally have no such plans. Frankly, I don’t think that I have anything in me that need to be written about.
