Grammy Awards 2024: PM Modi’s ‘Abundance in Millets’ loses the race to Zakir Hussain’s ‘Pashto’

Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s fusion band Shakti clinched the Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album for their latest release, "This Moment."

Musicians Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s fusion band Shakti clinched the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album for their latest release, ‘This Moment’. Taking to X, Grammys shared the post and wrote, “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner – ‘This Moment’ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.” The group also features guitarist John McLaughlin, percussionist V Selvaganesh and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan.

Mahadevan said in his acceptance speech, “Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends and India. India, we are proud of you… Last but not the least, I would like to dedicate this award to my wife whom every note of my music is dedicated to”.

They were nominated in the race Grammys with artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy and Davido. The 66th Annual Grammy Awards 2024 are being held in Los Angeles.

Zakir Hussain also received the Best Global Music Performance Grammy for his contribution to “Pashto”, where he collaborated with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, featuring Rakesh Chaurasia. He was up against formidable competition, including a unique collaboration between PM Narendra Modi, Falu and Gaurav.

“This Moment” features 8 songs created by John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).

Indian composer Ricky Kej also applauded Indian artists win. “Ustad Zakhir Hussain, the living legend creates history by winning 3 Grammys in one night!!! Rakesh Chaurasia wins 2!! .. and I am blessed to witness it,” he wrote. He added, “SHAKTI wins a GRAMMY! Through this album 4 brilliant Indian musicians win Grammys!! Just amazing. India is shining in every direction. Shankar Mahadevan, Selvaganesh Vinayakram, Ganesh Rajagopalan, Ustad Zakhir Hussain. Ustad Zakhir Hussain won a second Grammy along with virtuoso flute player Rakesh Chaurasia. Brilliant!”
