Comedy has become the genre synonymous with Punjabi cinema, and director Smeep Kang’s latest Punjabi-language feature starring Gippy Grewal, Binnu Dhillon and Karamjit Anmol is a fun, family film that comes with a social message. Kang has already delivered a blockbuster hit earlier this year with another Gippy Grewal-starrer, Carry On Jatta 3 (2023), followed by the recent Ammy Virk-starrer Gaddi Jaandi Ae Chalaangaan Maardi (2023). His latest offering, Maujaan Hi Maujaan, fully makes use of the rib-tickling performances of the actors to keep audiences amused.

Orphaned at an early age, three differently-abled brothers, Karan (Gippy Grewal), Soni (Binnu Dhillon), and Jassi (Karamjit Anmol) have brought up their sister Aman (Hashneen Chauhan) with a lot of love and wish to get her married. She is in love with Jimmy (Jimmy Sharma) but Jimmy’s father, Shamsher Singh Brar, (Yograj Singh) is prejudiced against differently-abled people and will never allow his son to marry into the family.

So, in order to ensure their sister’s happiness, the brothers must hide their true selves to deceive her father into believing that they are absolutely fine. While they manage to get away in the beginning, when Shamsher proposes a destination wedding, things get very complicated. The premise of the film creates hilarity and the witty dialogues keep the momentum going. The story and screenplay of the situational comedy are by Shreya Srivastava and Vaibhav Suman, with Naresh Kathooria and Nasir Zaman also credited for the writing. One can clearly see Kathooria’s imprint in the dialogues and silly situations that make for some mindless, pleasurable viewing.

There are a few scenes which are long drawn and get a bit tiresome, especially Karan’s constant misunderstanding and repetition of dialogues, but the brevity of the film ensures that the lags are not too many. The emotional core of the film – the brothers’ willingness to go to any length for the happiness of their sister – is heartwarming.

Although the film tries to highlight the prejudice that differently-abled people face in the society, much of it is mobilised for humour. One would have liked to see at least a few instances of the genuine difficulty, even discrimination that they constantly experience in their daily lives. What really makes Maujaan Hi Maujaan work is the ensemble cast of comedians, including BN Sharma and Nasir Chinyoti, not to mention a hilarious cameo by director Smeep Kang. Chinyoti’s performance is exceptional, and some of the best dialogues in the film are reserved for him.

Yograj Singh’s impressive performance as an imperious man who must come face to face with his prejudices is compelling. Both Tanu Grewal and Hashneen Chauhan have delivered good performances as well. The music does not disappoint with the upbeat “Dil Mangda”, the romantic “Pahada Nu”; and the playful “Peg Paa”. The wedding song “Jug Jug Jee” by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a beautiful number as well. Maujaan Hi Maujaan is an entertainer that will keep you smiling and even laughing out loud in places.
