A fantasy role-playing game which is recognised as the inspiration for modern versions and the gaming industry – guess there is something you can blame for the profusion of similar leave-your-brains-behind movies where the story is at the mercy of the next thing that can be blown up.

That said, Dungeons & Dragons (or D&D, as fans calls it) has enough nifty magical tricks, some pretty likable actors (including Bradley Cooper in a fun cameo as a stay-at-home husband, waiting for the stronger, beefier wifey to bring home the goodies), and Pine’s bluest-of-blue eyes to see it through bumps.

And there are several back-breaking ones here, in this tale involving two thieves who escape a stone castle in the middle of snowed-in desolation, only to discover they have been robbed of the daughter they left behind, by a fellow gang member and a wizard whose kohled eyes are dead giveaways of a serious derangement.

To get the girl back, apart from other precious things such as “a tablet of reawakening”, the two thieves must enter and exit several imposing castles, in different worlds, fight off dragons of every kind, and fight out of dungeons of numerous depths. Kind-hearted souls such as a sorcerer, a Druid and some other fellow who embodies Hollywood stud-like heroism help them.

There is light-hearted banter at all times lest terrifying monsters are not your thing, and at least one especially impressive scene of a Druid who can change shape doing so multiple times to escape in the course of a couple of ministers.

In the end, it really doesn’t matter what comes first – the dragon or the dungeon, or the dead who are not really dead – since you know it will all turn out alright.

Still, only the die-hard fans must brave this one.
