Villain director B Unnikrishnan slams media for rating Mohanlal-starrer poorly
Director B Unnikrishnan has accused the media of willingly berating his new film, Villian, starring Mohanlal, as it is biased against him. He said Villian would have been celebrated as a "classic" if the film had some other director's name on it.

Director B Unnikrishnan has joined the list of filmmakers and actors who have lashed out at the media for unfavourable reviews of their works. His latest directorial outing, Villian, featuring a big star cast of Mohanlal, Manju Warrier and Vishal, mostly received poor rating turning the director defensive.
He has accused the media of willingly berating his new film as it is biased against him. He said Villian would have been celebrated as a classic if the film had some other director’s name on it. “There is no film that has satisfied everyone,” Unnikrishnan told Manorama News when asked his reaction to mixed reviews for his film. “I read many reviews and I found them pathetic. I have done film reviews in the past very seriously,” he said while justifying his stance on the film’s reviews.
He also pointed out a review, which had described Manju’s character in the film as a fangirl of her husband. “That’s completely wrong. Her character buys a property and later tells her husband what she will be doing in that place. Her character has so much individuality. If they don’t understand the film, is it our problem?” he added.
Unnikrishnan also said, at a crucial point in the film, Mohanlal’s character takes the permission of his wife to do something. “That is one of the highlights of the scenes,” he added.
In a video posted on his Facebook page, Unnikrishnan has accused media of indulging in paid reviews. He requested the audience to watch the film with an “open mind” as he believes the film is very relevant to the times we live in.
Unnikrishnan is not the first filmmaker to throw tantrums at the media for unfavourable reviews. Vishal, who is also Nadigar Sangam general secretary and the chief of Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ council, has suggested the idea of restraining media from publishing reviews for the first three days of a film’s release.
Vishal, Hansika Motwani, Raashi Khanna, and Srikanth made their Malayalam debuts with this film.
