Weeks after a few of her comments on (Muslim) weddings in Kerala’s Malabar region left social media divided, Malayalam actor Nikhila Vimal addressed the controversy and alleged that her remarks were distorted by media houses.

During a conversation with Indian Cinema Gallery as part of promoting her film Ayalvaashi last month, Nikhila had observed that in Kannur, where she hails from, women are served food in the kitchen area during marriage functions in Muslim families. She also noted that Malabar Muslim families follow the practice of addressing the son-in-law of the house as puyyapla (new bridegroom), no matter how old he gets.

“Many media reported it without even knowing where it was said,” she stated while speaking to the media during the launch of the theme song of the Journalist Volley League at the Kannur Press Club. Alleging that only one portion of a big paragraph that she said about the uniqueness of Kannur was taken and misinterpreted by the media, Nikhila said, “You guys (journalists) just went on sharing and resharing a piece of news that you received without checking if it was true, or if or why I said it. You created this controversy and the subsequent discussions. So, you guys carry on with that.”

When the reporters asked if she could provide clarification on her statement, Nikhila said, “I am not going to provide any further explanation regarding this. The media made it controversial. I said that during a conversation. How can what someone said during a conversation be considered their statement? No reporter asked me what I said. I know exactly what I said.”

Soon after her comments last month went viral, social media platforms became a divisive space, with some users backing the actor while others strongly opposing her stance.

Nikhila Vimal’s next release will be the Tamil film Vaazhai, directed by Mari Selvaraj who previously helmed movies such as Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan.
