Over four months after the office bearers of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), including president Mohanlal, resigned en masse in response to the Justice Hema Committee’s findings and the sexual misconduct allegations against several male members, the association organised a Kudumba Sangamam (family gathering) event to mark the beginning of its comeback. The event was attended by superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty, along with actor and Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi, and was joined by numerous AMMA members and their families.

During his address, Mohanlal, the former president and current head of the association’s ad-hoc committee, described AMMA’s recent struggles as enduring a “dark cloud” and expressed hope that “we will reach the light soon.” He also emphasised the often unrecognised efforts of the association, stating, “We do much more than people realise and we have the potential to do things no other organisation can — not just for our members, but for the public as well.” Mohanlal further underscored the importance of unity and collective effort to strengthen AMMA.

While addressing the gathering, Malayalam megastar Mammootty remarked that a family gathering had long been a dream for AMMA. The event commenced with a football tournament featuring teams led by Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi, with the latter’s team reportedly emerging victorious.

The event also saw actor-minister Suresh Gopi taking a swipe at the critics of AMMA, though he did not directly address the controversies the association had faced recently. Acknowledging the love and effort that had contributed to AMMA’s growth, he pointed out, “I also distanced myself from AMMA for personal reasons, but I never truly left. Not once did I speak against the organisation, even as emotional outbursts.” For over two decades, Gopi had distanced himself from AMMA following a reported fallout over a stage show hosted by the association in the Gulf during its early years.

Suresh Gopi further commented on the group that had recently won an election within the organisation, suggesting that if they had brought about positive change during difficult times, they should now return to lead AMMA once more. He also emphasised the importance of bringing back those who had left, restoring governance and ensuring the association’s future success.

While avoiding mention of the sexual misconduct allegations surrounding several members, Gopi insisted that the organisation be referred to as “AMMA” (meaning “mother” in Malayalam) and not be pronounced by dividing the letters, as some have done in protest. “It was the late actor Murali who gave the name ‘AMMA’ to the association, and that’s how it should be pronounced. We will not obey what outside bosses say. This ‘A’ dot ‘M’ dot ‘M’ dot ‘A’ dot… They can keep that at their own houses. It is AMMA for us,” he added.
