Malayalam actor Manju Warrier has supported the release of her ex-husband Dileep's film Ramaleela, which has been facing protest due to its lead actor in Kerala. Dileep has been locked up in Aluva Sub Jail since July under the judicial custody for allegedly planning abduction and sexual assault of a woman actor.

Amid growing clamour for boycotting Ramaleela, the upcoming film starring embattled movie star Dileep in the lead role, actor Manju Warrier who is also the star’s ex-wife, has issued a statement supporting the release of the film. Ramaleela has been scheduled to hit the screens on September 28, the same day Majnu’s Udaharanam Sujatha will also open in theatres.

She has expressed her disapproval against the campaign to disrupt the release of Ramaleela as it has been gaining a lot of traction on social media. Some have even apparently threatened to vandalise theatres showing the film. She has said it was not right to target a film, which is a collective effort, because of one person.

“It is the right of the makers to ensure that their movie reaches the theatres and people get to see it. Nobody has the right to deny it,” Manju said in the statement posted on her Facebook page.

“Personal issues and differences should not be taken out on a movie. A film does not belong to one person alone, it is a collective effort of many people. It will be a gross injustice for the movie,” she added. “Let the people watch the movie and decide.”

Dileep has been locked up in Aluva Sub Jail since July under the judicial custody for allegedly planning abduction and sexual assault of a woman actor. The actor’s public image, who was once celebrated as ‘Janapriya Nayakan’ (people’s hero) of Malayalam cinema, has suffered a serious damage that has already caused the delay in the release of Ramaleela.

The big-ticket political drama had created quite a positive buzz among the public with its promo videos. The release of Ramaleela, which was scheduled to hit the screens on Eid, was postponed due to widespread protests against its lead actor in Kerala.

Ramaleela is directed by debutant filmmaker Arun Gopy and is produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam. Actor Prayaga Martin plays the female lead and Radhika Sarathkumar, Kalabhavan Shajon, Renji Panicker, Salim Kumar, Mukesh and Vijayaraghavan among others play the supporting cast.
