Malayalam actor Ajith Vijayan, known for his performances in films like 5 Sundarikal and Bangalore Days, passed away in Kochi on Sunday at the age of 57. In addition to his work in cinema, he was a familiar face in numerous television serials too. He was reportedly a native of Tripunithura’s Kannankulangara in Ernakulam district.

Hailing from a distinguished family of classical artistes, Ajith was the grandson of celebrated Kathakali exponent Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and renowned Mohiniyattam dancer Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma, according to Mathrubhumi. He was the son of the late CK Vijayan and Mohiniyattam dancer Kala Vijayan, and the nephew of the late veteran actor Kalasala Babu.

Though he appeared in various films and television serials, Ajith Vijayan gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the character Ambiswamy in director Amal Neerad’s segment Kullante Bharya in the anthology film 5 Sundarikal (2013). Based on a story by Chinese author Feng Jicai and scripted by Unni R, the segment follows a newlywed couple — a tall woman and her short husband — who move into a housing colony where they become the subject of gossip due to their physical differences. The story unfolds from the perspective of a young man (Dulquer Salmaan) confined to a wheelchair after an accident. Ajith’s performance as a judgmental elderly neighbour earned him significant appreciation.

He also won praise for his role as an astrologer in Anjali Menon’s Bangalore Days (2014). Ajith also appeared in movies such as Sathyan Anthikad’s Oru Indian Pranayakadha (2013) and Nadirsha’s Amar Akbar Anthony (2015). Ajith is survived by his wife Dhanya and their daughters Gayathri and Gauri.
