One of the significant hurdles that the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer King of Kotha was expected to confront was the simultaneous release of two other prominent Malayalam films, a mere day after its release.

The action film RDX and Nivin Pauly’s Ramachandra Boss and Co hit theatres on a Friday, which, coupled with it being a regular workday, resulted in Dulquer Salmaan’s gangster saga experiencing a significant 69 per cent dip in its domestic box office earnings. Following its opening of Rs 6.6 crore, King of Kotha recorded an India nett collection of only Rs 2 crore on Friday, according to early estimates shared by industry tracker Sacnilk.

Among the various iterations of King of Kotha, the Malayalam version amassed Rs 1.7 crore, while the Telugu and Tamil versions Rs 15 lakh each.

Meanwhile, the movie has so far achieved a global gross of Rs 16.8 crore, with overseas earnings contributing Rs 8.5 crore to its overall revenue. Sacnilk has predicted that the movie is expected to generate around Rs 2.16 crore in the domestic market on Saturday, marking the first weekend following its release.

On Friday, the gangster drama witnessed an overall 27.64 per cent Malayalam occupancy. Initially, during the morning shows, the movie saw a 17.02 per cent occupancy within the Malayalam market. However, as the day unfolded, the percentages experienced a consistent increase: rising to 22.52 per cent during the afternoon showings, reaching 30.72 per cent during the evening shows, and peaking at 40.31 per cent for the night screenings.

Helmed by debutant Abhilash Joshiy, the film also stars Shabeer Kallarakkal, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Nyla Usha, Chemban Vinod Jose, Prasanna and Gokul Suresh.

King of Kotha marks Dulquer Salmaan’s comeback to the Malayalam film industry after more than a year. His previous release was the crime thriller Salute, which directly premiered on an OTT platform in early 2022.

Following the release of King of Kotha, Dulquer took to his Instagram handle and penned a heartfelt note thanking his fans and audience for all the love they have showered on his movie.

“LOVE! I have always received more love than I could ever dream of. Every single member of the audience is the reason for my being here. And I give it my all every time because of that love. Even when I stumble you all lift me up. It humbles me and encourages all of us to keep trying harder. Your calls and messages have put me over the moon. I am humbled that our film is receiving so much love from the audiences. The actor continued, “Every day on a set and every film is a learning experience. A big hug to each one of you who are giving our film an opportunity to entertain you, we are glad to be a part of your Onam. We thank our audiences from the bottom of our hearts,” Dulquer wrote.

In its review of the movie, The Indian Express noted: “Though the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer possessed the potential to be celebrated alongside iconic gangster movies like Satya, Vada Chennai, and Gangs of Wasseypur, its failure to feature a compelling narrative prevents it from reaching the lofty heights.”
