Kalamkaval box office collection day 1: Mammootty’s crime thriller outperforms Lokah Chapter 1, earns Rs 4.75 cr

Kalamkaval box office collection day 1: Mammootty’s latest crime thriller has opened on a strong note, surpassing the first-day collections of his recent releases.

Mammootty's crime thriller Kalamkaval has released in cinemas.Kalamkaval box office collection day 1: The film earned Rs 4.75 crore.

Kalamkaval box office collection day 1: Even before Mammootty’s latest crime thriller Kalamkaval hit theatres, the film had already entered the record books by securing the third-highest advance booking numbers in Mollywood this year, trailing only behind Mohanlal’s Empuraan and Thudarum. Now, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has delivered an impressive opening day performance as well, collecting an estimated Rs 4.75 crore. With more than 900 shows nationwide, Kalamkaval recorded an overall day-one occupancy of 49.29%.

The film’s occupancy pattern reflected strong audience interest throughout the day. It opened with a robust 40.16% turnout for morning shows, dipped slightly to 34.56% in the afternoon, climbed to 54.54% during the evening shows, and peaked at 67.89% by night. Region-wise, Bengaluru hosted the highest number of screenings with 172 shows but registered a modest 34% occupancy. Kochi, with 164 shows, delivered the film’s strongest regional performance, posting an impressive 75.75% occupancy. Thiruvananthapuram followed with 159 shows and a healthy 45.5% turnout.

When compared with Mammootty’s recent releases, Kalamkaval clearly marks an upswing. His summer actioner Bazooka opened at just Rs 3.2 crore, while Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse underperformed with Rs 1.75 crore on its first day. Even the critically acclaimed horror drama Bramayugam, released last year, earned a lower opening of Rs 3.65 crore. However, Kalamkaval still trails behind some of Mammootty’s biggest recent openers, such as Turbo (Rs 6.25 crore), Bheeshma Parvam (Rs 5.9 crore), and Agent (Rs 5.95 crore).

In the broader landscape of Malayalam cinema this year, Kalamkaval’s start looks respectable. It indeed falls far short of the massive numbers generated by Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan (Rs 21 crore) and Thudarum (Rs 6.32 crore), but it comfortably outperforms Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, the year’s highest grosser, which opened at around Rs 2.7 crore. It has also surpassed Pranav Mohanlal’s Dies Irae (Rs 4.7 crore) and Mohanlal’s Hridayapoorvam (Rs 3.25 crore).

With no major competing releases and early word of mouth appearing favourable, Kalamkaval is positioned to sustain momentum through the weekend. Whether it can break into the year’s top three grossers remains to be seen.
