Much to the delight of fans of both Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, the duo has finally announced the release date for Empuraan, the much-awaited sequel to their 2019 political action thriller Lucifer. On the occasion of Kerala Piravi (the day the state was formed in 1956) on November 1, both Mohanlal and Prithviraj took to social media to share another poster of the movie, featuring the release date for Empuraan.
Unlike the earlier posters that highlighted the film’s expansive scope and Mohanlal’s powerful character, this latest poster is packed with mysteries. It features a man dressed in white, with a red Chinese dragon emblazoned on his back, facing away from the viewer. While he stands in the background, the foreground features a grey curtain engulfed in flames and adorned with the outline of the same dragon in various places. A closer inspection of the poster also reveals the silhouette of Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam (Mohanlal) to the man’s right. Given that Lucifer concluded by revealing that Stephen is known as Khureshi Ab’raam in the underworld and that he is the don of a crime syndicate, this new poster has sparked curiosity about the relationship between this character and Khureshi and his gang.
“The second instalment of the Lucifer franchise hits cinemas worldwide on March 27, 2025!” Mohanlal and Prithviraj noted on their respective social media accounts while sharing the new poster. It may be recalled that Lucifer hit the screens on March 28, 2019. Mounted on a massive budget, Empuraan will be filmed in the UK, the US, Russia, Gujarat, and Hyderabad. Recently, the filmmaker announced the completion of the Thiruvananthapuram leg of Empuraan’s shooting.
One of the most anticipated upcoming Malayalam films, Empuraan serves as the second instalment in a planned trilogy. Penned by Murali Gopy, Empuraan also stars Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Sai Kumar, Baiju Santhosh, Saniya Iyappan, and Sachin Khedekar, all reprising their roles from Lucifer. The new movie is jointly produced by Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions and will be released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
