Ryan Reynolds teases Deadpool easter eggs in Avengers Doomsday, hints at possible return: ‘I’ve written them all at home’

Ryan Reynolds keeps fans guessing on Deadpool's return in Avengers Doomsday at TIFF amid rumors of on-set feuds and massive MCU crossovers.

Ryan Reynolds is keeping it coy about a possible Doomsday return as Deadpool, even as Marvel theories have fans convinced he’s already a part of the cast. Back in August, he set the internet buzzing after posting a shot of the Avengers logo with a spray-painted “A” over it.  In no time, the picture went viral with speculation that he might be teasing his upcoming stint in the new Avengers movie. Threads on Reddit went wild after reports surfaced that Ryan and Robert Downey Jr (who is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Doomsday) are supposedly feuding on set, and now the actor was directly asked whether or not this is happening.

Ryan recently attended the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where he was promoting his new John Candy documentary, I Like Me. The documentary on the famous comedian is directed by Colin Hanks. Later, while participating in an informal interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan was asked about the John Candy Easter eggs that he secretly used in Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine for promotion. During the TIFF premiere, the documentary aired all those clips and the audience realised that they failed to notice these back when they first came out. When asked if fans should expect the same in Avengers Doomsday, and if that confirmed his involvement, Ryan instantly dodged the question and laughed. “There are four that I’ve got in there,” he said sarcastically. “Of course, I’ve written them all at home in my PJs, and nobody’s seen ’em, nor have I stepped foot on set. But, yeah, that’s about as far as I’ll go on that one.”

The hype around Deadpool’s return probably comes from the fact that Robert Downey Jr is confirmed to return to the MCU with this movie, not as Iron Man but as Marvel’s biggest villain. Avengers Doomsday is set to bring together the Avengers and X-Men worlds in what’s being called the franchise’s biggest crossover. Adding to the speculation is Channing Tatum’s Gambit, who showed up in Deadpool & Wolverine and is also part of the cast, so there’s really no wild reason to dismiss Ryan’s presence in Doomsday. Earlier, a report from The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Ryan is in the film, but Deadline countered with a piece saying he isn’t involved at all. Marvel has stayed completely silent on the matter.

Meanwhile, at TIFF, Ryan also spoke about his Candy Easter eggs in Deadpool & Wolverine, including a coffee mug with the words I Like Me. Talking about it, he said, “Part of it is that the character of Wade Wilson is in a highly militarised shame spiral; he sort of lives in that state and has all kinds of maladaptive coping mechanisms.” According to him, the character is a mix of “Neal Page and Del Griffith,” Steve Martin and Candy’s characters from John Hughes’ comedy. “The only difference is that he’s manipulative about which toggle he pushes at what time.”

Avengers Doomsday is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026. The movie is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.
