Whether they are successful at the box office or not, films around video games always make for some great entertainment. Simon West’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider, John Moore’s Max Payne, and Mike Newell’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time are good examples of this phenomenon. Now another celebrated video game is getting a live-action adaptation, and it is Nintendo’s very own The Legend of Zelda.
The game developer is pairing up with Sony for the project, and they have just released the first look. The first look showcases the beloved characters of Princess Zelda and swordsman Link, sitting out in a green pasture, armed for the challenge that lies ahead. Both are clad in battle-ready clothes, Hylian ears, and a penetrating gaze.
The original video game was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. It was first released on February 21, 1986. The game followed the story of Link, a brave swordsman who had sworn to protect the land of Hyrule. Along with him was Zelda, who had the blood of Goddess Hylia herself. Together they wage a war against Ganon, a tyrant ruler who wishes to use the powers of the Triforce in order to create a darker and more grim world. Since its start, the game series has included 21 different editions, along with several spin-offs.
The video game series has sold over 150 million copies, with Breath of the Wild being its most successful instalment. It will be interesting to see how well the film does compared to other video game adaptations. For example, the first Lara Croft, starring Angeline Jolie, earned $273 million (Rs 2400 cr), while Prince of Persia, starring Jack Gylenhaal, made $336 million (Rs 2975 cr) worldwide.
Directed by Wes Ball of Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fame, only the top two cast members of the film have been revealed as of yet: Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
