Filmmaker James Cameron has revealed the title of the third instalment of his global blockbuster series, Avatar. At the ongoing D23 convention, the filmmaker dropped the big reveal and said that Avatar 3 will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash. The title announcement was met with a “big applause,” noted The Hollywood Reporter.

Avatar was released in 2009, followed by its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, which hit the screens in December 2022. The third installment of the franchise is due to release globally December 2025.

Talking about the new Avatar film, James Cameron said there will be “new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes,” and added that the viewers will get to witness a lot more of Pandora, the tropical planet where these movies are set

“The new film is not what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want,” he added. Avatar: Fire and Ash stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana in the lead roles, and has already been filmed. It will be followed by two more Avatar films, with the fourth instalment scheduled to release in December 2029 and the fifth one in December 2031.

The makers also unveiled concept art from the new film on Instagram, with the caption, “Just announced at #D23, our title for the next Avatar film: Avatar: Fire and Ash. Get ready to journey back to Pandora, in theaters December 19, 2025.”

While the first Avatar showed the forest-dwelling Na’vi, the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, introduced the Metkayina– the tribe that lives in the coastal regions of Pandora.

In an earlier interview with Collider, James Cameron had said the audience would get to see a “darker side” of the Na’vi– fire-wielding residents of the planet, that he called the “Ash People”.

“The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite,” he had said.

The first Avatar still stands as the highest grossing film of all time, despite facing the 2019 Marvel juggernaut Avengers: Endgame. Avatar: The Way of Water is ranked third on the list, with a global gross of $ 2,320,250,281. Cameron has directed three of the top five highest-grossing films of all time.
