Waheeda kicks off Kerala film festival

Rehman said she considered it a great honour to have been invited to the festival,which has over the years emerged as one of the premier cultural events.

The 15th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala began in Thiruvananthapuram this evening with yesteryear’s Bollywood actress Waheeda Rahman and Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan lighting the lamp for the week-long event.

Rehman said she considered it a great honour to have been invited to the festival,which has over the years emerged as one of the premier cultural events of the country.

Achuthanandan said the festival would be an opportunity for the film lovers,directors and artistes to get themselves familiarised with the latest trends in world cinema.

‘Biutiful’ by Mexican director Alenjandro Gonzales Inarritu about the multiplicity that each one of us is,’The White Ribbon’ a dark and brooding work by Michael Haneke (Germany) and ‘Of love and other demons’ based on Gabriel Garcia Marequez’ famous novel directed by Costarican director Hilda Hidalgo are among the major attractions at the festival.

Cine-lovers would have a taste of the cream from world cinema produced after 2008 at the festival. ‘The House of Branching Love’ by renowned Finland director Mika Kaurismaki,a complex narrative of human relationships,’Certified Copy’ by Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami are among the other notable films in the World Cinema section.

Films of German master Werner Herzog,who was honoured for lifetime achievement at the inaugural function and RainerWerner Fassbinder will also be attractions at the festival.

The IFFK is widely regarded for its commitment to selection of films based on social issues,especially from the Third World. In the ‘Foreget Africa’ section,movies by a number of film-makers from different countries who produced narratives on the country would be screened.

The homage section includes films of Malayalam movie personalities who passed away during the last year. Films of cinematographer Mankada Ravivarma,actor-directors Venu Nagavally and ‘Cochin’ Haneefa,music director M G Radhakrishnan and actors ‘Adoor’ Pankajam,Sreenath and lyricist Girish Puthenchery would be screened.
