PVR to screen Past Lives from July 7
Director Celine Song’s debut, which stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro, Past Lives is already touted as one of the contenders for Oscar 2024

The exclusive screening of Korean-Canadian Celine Song’s directorial debut Past Lives, organised by PVR INOX Pictures in New Delhi on July 28, received a positive response. PVR INOX Pictures, the largest cinema exhibitor in India, is set to screen the movie for Indian audiences from July 7.
The movie, which stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, is already touted as one of the contenders for Oscar 2024. Song, a playwright and screenwriter, explores themes of love, the Korean diaspora, and culture in her directorial debut. The story follows the life of the protagonist Nora Young (played by Lee) and how her family’s decision to move to the United States changes her relationship with her childhood friend Hae Sung (played by Yoo).
Korean culture is slowly making inroads into India with several people getting hooked to K-pop and K-dramas. While BTS undoubtedly has a huge ‘army’ in India, Indians are also warming up to Korean food, culture, and movies.
Past Lives screened at Sundance Film Festival in January this year and was released in the US on June 2. Talking about bringing the movie to Indian audiences, Nayana Bijli, the acquisitions and distribution manager at PVR INOX Pictures, said, “We saw the movie at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and loved it. It is a sweet movie about love at different moments in time. We wanted to bring movies that connected with the Indian audience. Part of this movie explores the themes of love, culture theme, and diaspora, which we thought would click with the Indian audiences.”
Bijli is also a member of the MAMI board, representing PVR-INOX and any associations with the brand, focussing on acquiring foreign-language and independent Hollywood content.
Earlier this year, following several requests from the burgeoning anime community in India, PVR got the screen rights for Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume (2022) earlier this year. So far, PVR has released eight anime films and plans to bring more foreign films to Indian audiences.
