Mahesh Manjrekar returns to direction with ‘City of Gold’

Direction had taken a backseat for Manjrekar after he found fame as an actor in films like ‘Kaante’,Runn’ and recently released blockbuster ‘Wanted’.

“I finally found a script that I could connect to and that got my creative juices flowing all over again,” Manjrekar said in a statement.

Produced by Dar Media Pvt Ltd,the film looks at the lives of the downtrodden mill workers.

“It takes the viewer through a heart-wrenching and violent journey of the trials and tribulations of those who had to sacrifice their all for these monuments to consumerism could be built,mill workers of the area,” Manjrekar said.

The 56-year-old maverick has also cast the family members of the real mill workers in the film.

“The authenticity of their performances has challenged even such fine exponents of the craft of acting such as Seema Biswas and Satish Kaushik who appear in the movie alongside them,” he added.

The movie is co-written by playwright Jayant Pawar and Manjrekar and is expected to release in May next year.

It is the first in a series of 11 planned ventures that DAR Media plans to undertake between 2010-2012,including at least two additional films with Majrekar.
