Actor Saif Ali Khan’s role of Langda Tyagi in 2006 film Omkara, left fans spellbound and critics in awe of him. However, it was Aamir Khan who was originally considered for the part. Saif Ali Khan had revealed in an interview that since Aamir wanted certain changes in the film, director Vishal Bhardwaj never called him back.
In an interview with Film Companion, Saif recalled what Vishal told him about the director’s conversation with Aamir.
When asked if he knew back then that Aamir was being considered for the role, Saif said, “Yes, that is what I heard later.” He continued to say, “Vishal said, ‘he was asking me a lot of questions and he wanted to alter things’.” Aamir, who is known to be meticulous with his role and involved in his projects, never heard back from Vishal.
Saif said, “Aamir must have just had a discussion with him but Vishal apparently said he will call him back and then then called me instead. He just said it is not going to work because he wasn’t sure it was going to go the way Aamir wanted. It was not something Vishal was comfortable with following.”
Omkara was based on Shakespeare’s Othello and won three National Awards in the category of Best Supporting Actress, Best Audiography and Best Supporting Actress. It also starred several other stars like Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu, Naseeruddin Shah and Deepak Dobriyal. Vishal’s other two films Maqbool and Haider are the other two parts of Othello’s trilogy.
