When Govinda made so much money he didn’t know what do do with it; his first idea was to ‘buy 100 auto rickshaws’
Govinda once called his brother into a room and showed him all the money he'd made. The goal was to figure out what to do with it.

Self-made star Govinda dominated the Hindi film industry during the 1990s, delivering some of the biggest hits of the decade. During this time, he made truck loads of money, but didn’t know exactly what to do with it. In an interview, Govinda and his brother recalled the early stages of his success, and the unusual money making schemes that the actor came up with.
Chatting with fellow actor Vinay Pathak on the chat show Har Ghar Kucch Kehta Hai in 2014, Govinda said that his brother would shoot down all his ideas by saying, ‘Yeh humara kaam nahi hai (this isn’t our kind of work). His brother Kirti said that their family had seen great poverty, and all that he ever wanted was for them to come out of it.
He said in Hindi, “Govinda carved his own path in the film industry, and did it on his own. I, on the other hand, took a lot of knocks. But when he started out, I assumed the responsibility of becoming his secretary. During this time, I made him sign way too many films. We’d experienced a lot of poverty together, and I only wanted to emerge from it.”
He continued, “One day, he locked the room we were in, and presented all his money, all his bank documents. I was overjoyed. But we had to figure out what to do with the money. And Govinda’s first idea was, ‘Pappu, let’s buy 100 auto rickshaws’. I told him this wasn’t our kind of business… Some time later, Govinda became a star. Once again, we wondered what to do with all his money. And this time, he said, ‘Pappu, let’s buy 100 trucks’. Again, I told him this wasn’t our kind of business.” Govinda laughed at the memory, and said that his brother always had the same response to his ideas.
Previously, Govinda has also spoken about the incredible number of movies he signed immediately after his debut. In an interview on the sets of his film Ghar Mein Ram Gali Mein Shyam in 1987, Govinda revealed that he’d signed as many as 70 films after his debut, but had to turn a lot of them down because he simply didn’t have the time. He ultimately ended up doing around 10 films a year for the first few years of his career. Govinda isn’t as popular as he used to be, but is still regularly seen on the reality show circuit, and remains a favourite of his fans.
