When Amitabh Bachchan reflected upon why actors resort to alcohol, drugs: ‘We go through great psychological troubles’
In an old video clip, Amitabh Bachchan reflects upon the mental state of the actors who live most of the crucial emotions of life on-screen.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan had once reflected upon the mental state of actors while enacting scenes in films. Big B cited the example of enacting the scene of a parent’s death and going through the pain of it, not once but multiple times.
“Actors go through an experience in a film which most of you will go through once in a lifetime. Let’s say, the death of a parent. Most of you, God forbid, will go through that experience once, we have had to go through that experience at least, 10 or 12 times,” the actor is heard saying in an old clip.
Bachchan added that to bring reality to the scene, actors “sometimes like to imagine that it is actually happening to us.” He elaborated, “For that moment, we actually go through that process and give out everything that is inside us. For us to keep doing that, film after film, 12-15 times, is sometimes a very painful experience but because you are a professional and it is required of you to do so, you do it.”
After doing a parent’s death scene many times on-screen, Amitabh Bachchan also got worried about his emotions when the moment will come in his real life. He said, “I do not know when the actual thing happens to me, what is that emotion that I will go through, will it be the real one or the one that I have already spent and lost during the enactment of one of my scenes, that is a scary feeling.”
Not just the sad scenes, Amitabh Bachchan said that this happens to actors even while enacting romantic and comedy scenes. “I think most actors go through this several times and they spend a lot of their emotions that are supposed to be inside. That is why perhaps a lot of actors go through great psychological and mental troubles, lot of us cannot face it and in order to face it, we take the support of alcohol and drugs,” Big B said.
On the work front, Amitabh has a packed schedule, with multiple projects in the pipeline, including the courtroom drama Section 84, Project K with Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, and the untitled Hindi remake of The Intern, also with Padukone.
