Bawaal can mean a lot of things — a calamity, a catastrophe or just a mischance. Director Nitesh Tiwari, meanwhile, has used it as a metaphor for a young man finding his way in life after getting some hard-earned lessons and pauses along the way. How the Holocaust, the horrific murder of over six million Jews by Hitler during the World War 2, figures in it is something only time will tell. The director, who launched the trailer of Bawaal in Dubai on Sunday, is refusing to answer questions now. He would rather that you watch the Janhvi Kapoor-Varun Dhawan film as it comes out on Amazon Prime Video on July 21 and find your own answers.

If the film’s teaser had people writhing inside what looks like a gas chamber, the trailer had more footage of the WW2. Nisha (played by Janhvi Kapoor) tells Ajju bhaiya (played by Varun), “We are no different from Hitler as all of us aren’t content with what we have.” Asked how an Indian small-town love story has Hitler featured in it, the director said, “A film that talks about events from World War 2 cannot be made without mentioning Hitler. When you start writing it, it’s not about Hitler. There are so much more to it. Every incident in World War 2 has been carefully chosen.” Nitesh said that he will speak at length about his narrative choice once the film is out.

At the event, Varun Dhawan also spoke about Bawaal, that has been shot across Europe including Poland and Amsterdam, and said, “This film (Bawaal) is about the truth. It’s all about what you want from life and your insecurities. I have never been as sure about a film as I am about Bawaal.”

He added, “Working with Nitesh sir was always on my bucket list. I still remember, I often asked Nitesh sir to make a film with me in Covid times. Finally, after 7-8 months, he had a story for me. I personally feel it is one of my best characters. This is closest to the reality.”

Varun also said that Nitesh Tiwari threw him a googly when he asked him about how to prepare for the role in Bawaal. “I always asked Nitesh sir on how to prep for the film. He said, ‘Tu mere office aa ja.’ The performance you see is all him. I am very excited to bring this film to the audience, and I will be looking to all feedback.”

The actor also revealed that from a very early age he wanted to be an actor but was scared to tell his family. “I always dreamt of being an actor and I manifested it from an early age. I was scared to tell my dad who was so successful. I always said I want to be a businessman when I grow up. In fact, I told him after I bagged Student Of The Year,” said Varun.

Janhvi Kapoor also said she haunted Nitesh Tiwari and producer Sajid Nadiadwala till they cast her in Bawaal. “I kept on saying that please take my audition,” said Janhvi.
