Singer Sidhu Moosewala’s death in 2022 shocked the country after he was shot in broad daylight in his hometown. The incident took place almost three years ago, but people connected with the family are still asking questions as to why he was murdered. Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar’s gang had taken responsibility for the crime but the reason as to why this happened has been explored in a new documentary series by BBC, The Killing Call. The second episode of the documentary claims that Sidhu was in touch with Lawrence Bishnoi from the time he lived in Canada and was in the initial days of his career. His relationship with the gangster, and his rivals, deepened as he moved back to India, and this, somehow, became the reason behind his murder. Goldy Brar, who is also one of the accused and is still at large, also spoke about the incident in this documentary via audio recordings.
In the episode, investigative journalist Ishleen Kaur said that “Sidhu was in touch with Lawrence Bishnoi” from the time he was in Canada, and added that he also “became friendly with Bishnoi’s rivals, Bambiha gang.” The episode tries to find the main reason as to why there was conflict between Sidhu and Lawrence and an anonymous music associate says that a gangster named Mandeep Dhaliwal, who was a part of the Bambiha gang, had organised a kabaddi match, and invited Sidhu to perform. Lawrence did not want Sidhu to hang out with the rival gang but Sidhu went ahead anyway.
In August 2021, the murder of Vicky Middukhera led to further chaos. Vicky was a close friend of both Lawrence and Goldy and they saw him as a mentor. Bambiha gang allegedly took responsibility for the murder but this created problems for Sidhu, as he was known to be friends with them. Later, when the chargesheet of the murder was filed, the name of Shaganpreet Singh, who was a close associate and friend of Sidhu, was listed as someone who had aided the murder plot. HGS Dhaliwal of the Delhi Police Special Cell said in the documentary, “Shaganpreet hosted the shooters, gave them accommodation.” Shaganpreet left the country but rumours started that Sidhu might have been involved in the murder of Vicky as well. Even though he denied it, the perception was such that Sidhu had been friendly with the rival gang.
Goldy Brar further said, “Everyone knew Sidhu’s role (in Vicky’s death), the police knew, even the journalists knew. He was using his political power, his money, his resources to help our rivals, those who killed our brother. We wanted him to face punishment for what he’d done. He should have been booked. He should have been jailed but no one heard our plea. So we took it upon ourselves. When decency falls on deaf ears, it’s the gunshot that gets heard.” He added, “We had no option but to kill him. He had to face the consequences of his actions. It was either him or us. As simple as that.”
