The Great Indian Kapil Show | Aamir Khan says his kids don’t listen to him, nor take his advice: ‘They are not interested in me’

Aamir Khan, who recently appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show, told host Kapil Sharma that his own children ignore his advice, while the children of his colleagues in the industry often seek career guidance from him.

You may be among the biggest stars in Bollywood, but when it comes to your own children, you are no different from any other Indian parent who keeps complaining, “Bacche toh hamari sunte hi nahin” (kids don’t listen to us). And Bollywood icon Aamir Khan is no exception. The actor-producer, who recently appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show, “poured his heart out” and complained to comedian-host Kapil Sharma that his own children — Junaid, Ira, and Azad — never take his advice despite his reputation for offering valuable guidance to newcomers in the industry at the behest of their parents.

Sharing a tale of his unheeded wisdom, the PK actor lamented,  “My children just don’t listen to me. Sometimes I feel our generation is stuck in the middle. We used to listen to our parents. We thought our children would listen to us and that our time would also come, as Ranveer Singh said (in his song “Apna Time Ayega”). But when we became parents, our children had changed. They just don’t listen to us. First, our parents scolded us, and now our children are doing the same.”

Reminiscing about a friend’s request, Aamir recounted, “Jaggu (Jackie Shroff) is a very good friend of mine. So, when his son Tiger Shroff was going to make his debut in the industry, Jaggu told me, ‘He is my son. Meet him once, talk to him. Just see how he is.’” Aamir further revealed that many of his colleagues frequently ask him to guide their children, hoping they might learn from his extensive experience and profound insights.

Despite the eagerness of these newcomers to learn from him, Aamir finds it ironic that his own children brush aside his advice. “But my children are not interested in me. They never take my advice. And when I give advice, they go, ‘Papa!’ (indicating they don’t want to be told what to do),” said the Dangal actor, adding with a tinge of humour, “Ghar ki murgi dal barabar (Familiarity breeds contempt). It’s a perfect saying.”

The same disregard extends to his sisters, Farhat and Nikhat Khan, both talented in their own right but resistant to his guidance. “Even my sister Farhat, who is a great performer, doesn’t listen to me when I tell her to act in films. She is so good,” Aamir admitted.

While Aamir Khan may be able to shape and inspire the careers of numerous aspiring actors, he continues to grapple with the challenge of influencing those closest to him.
