Thamma box office collection day 9: Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna's vampire movie surpasses Munjya.Aditya Sarpotdar’s vampire movie Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, has finally surpassed the lifetime earnings of his previous directorial in Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik’s Maddock Horror Comedy Universe — Munjya. Last year, that film, starring Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh, went on to amass Rs 101.60 crore.
On Wednesday (day 9) at the domestic box office, Thamma earned Rs 3.25 crore, its lowest-single day collection yet. This was a decline from its Tuesday (day 8) earnings of Rs 5.75 crore, a slight increase from its Monday (day 7) collection of Rs 4.30 crore. The opening week of Thamma was decent as it minted in double digits every day.
On Sunday (day 6), Thamma amassed Rs 12.60 crore, a slight dip from its Saturday (day 5) earnings of Rs 13.10 crore. That was a significant increase from its Friday (day 4) collection of Rs 10 crore. The film earned Rs 13 crore on Thursday (day 3), Rs 18.60 crore on Wednesday (day 2), and Rs 24 crore on its opening day right after Diwali, as per Sacnilk.
The total box office collection of Thamma after nine days in India stands at Rs 104.60 crore. Thus, it’s become the third film in the MHCU to enter the Rs 100 crore club, after Amar Kaushik’s 2018 directorial debut Stree, Munjya, and Kaushik’s blockbuster horror comedy Stree 2 last year, which went on to become the highest grossing Hindi film in India, earning as much as Rs 597.99 crore.
That’s clearly an unattainable target for Thamma given its current trajectory. In comparison, Stree 2 entered the Rs 100 crore club in just less than three days last year. Ayushmann’s film has a long way to go before it can even challenge the lifetime domestic earnings of the first part of Stree, which garnered Rs 129.83 crore after a long eight-week run back in 2018.
But Thamma is also not the lowest earning member of the MHCU. Days after surpassing the lifetime domestic earnings of Kaushik’s 2022 creature comedy Bhediya (Rs 68.99 crore), starring Varun Dhawan, it’s now also surpassed those of Munjya. However, unlike Thamma, Munjya didn’t boast of A-list stars and also released in a non-holiday week.
Thamma has another week to perform before it encounters new competition in Suparn Verma’s courtroom thriller Haq, starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, which is slated to release in cinemas on November 7. The vampire movie has earned the double of the other Diwali release — Milap Zaveri’s romantic drama Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat. The Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa-starrer has earned Rs 52.25 crore in the same period of nine days. However, its earnings on Wednesday (day 9) at Rs 2.75 crore aren’t far behind that of Thamma at Rs 3.25 crore.
Besides starring Ayushmann and Rashmika as vampires in love, Thamma also stars Paresh Rawal and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, it’s written by Niren Bhatt.
