According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk (as of 9 p.m.), the film collected Rs 24.87 crore on Tuesday. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and produced by Maddock Films, Thamma is the latest addition to the studio’s expanding horror-comedy universe.
On Day 1, the film recorded an overall theatre occupancy of 32.83%, with morning shows at 15.76%, afternoon shows at 39.81%, and evening shows peaking at 42.91%. Chennai registered the highest occupancy at 53%. In the Telugu version, the occupancy stood at 18.37%. Although the morning shows opened slow, positive word of mouth helped boost footfall through the day.
Thamma has opened to better numbers than other films in the horror-comedy universe, including, Bhediya (Rs 7.48 crore), Stree (Rs 6.82 crore) and Munjya (Rs 4 crore). The film is also facing competition from Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa. However, Ayushmann Khurrana’s film is way ahead of it, as the romantic drama minted only Rs 2.85 crore at the box office as per early estimates by Sacnilk.

The movie opened to mixed reviews on Tuesday. An excerpt from SCREEN’s review of Thamma read, “Yet another Maddock stable offering, with the by-now familiar fix of the natural and supernatural, risque humour, in-house jokes, meta-movie references and item numbers, Thamma goes one better, by giving us not one but two of those. And a heavier star slate than before, with a combo of Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, playing a pair of star-crossed lovers whose romance is overseen by betaals and bhediyaas and other mythological creatures. But I have to sadly report that the law of diminishing returns has clearly set in, in the work of a director who gave us the comparatively perky ‘Munjya’ and ‘Kakuda’: there is so little that engages in this crowded canvas, written by Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew and Afrun Falara, that the result is a pair of hurting ears and glazed eyes.”
Besides Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, Thamma also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles. The film hit theatres on October 21.
