Tanishaa Mukerji on constant comparisons with sister Kajol: ‘My career was not as good as my sister, but she started when she was 16’

Tanishaa Mukerji revealed that Kajol took on more responsibilities early on in her life and Tanishaa had more liberty in terms of choosing her own films.

Tanishaa Mukerji, who is the sister of film actor Kajol and daughter of yesteryear star Tanuja, recently talked about being compared to her sister in terms of their careers. The actor, who marked her acting debut with the 2003 film Sssshhh…, didn’t have the kind of start that her sister had with the 1992 film Bekhudi, which got her positive reviews for her “innocent charm.” Unlike Kajol, Tanishaa was seen in very few films, however, she credits her older sister for giving her the comfort and luxury to choose not to do films actively.

Tanishaa, who recently appeared in the film Luv You Shankar alongside Shreyas Talpade, spoke to indianexpress.com about the constant comparison that she witnesses between her and her sister and said that it does not bother her. She said, “These things don’t bother me. I can’t look at my sister and me and compare. I don’t even compare myself to other actors, why will I compare myself to my sister? Every actor and star has their own journey, that’s what I believe. And yes, my career was not as good as my sister, but she started when she was 16. I got so much privilege because she was in the industry. I thank her career for giving me whatever I needed. At the end of the day, I had a very comfortable career. I didn’t have to work. So from that aspect, I never compare. I think the world loves to keep comparing, I don’t live in that space.”

The 46-year-old also recalled her childhood with her sister and revealed, “Kajol was a naughty kid.” She added, “She got into more troubles that I did. When we were kids, Kajol and I, we used to fight a lot. My dad used to call us Tom and Jerry.”

However, Tanishaa also revealed that Kajol, who took on many responsibilities quite early in her life is stricter than their mother Tanuja. “My mother and I are like friends and my sister is like my mother. She is like all our mothers. She is the strict one, full mummy,” said Mukerji.
