Sunny Deol promises more films like Gadar 2 for fans, lashes out at elitist ‘class and mass’ division: ‘Aapko akkal nahi hai?’

Sunny Deol said he couldn't stop laughing and crying when it became clear that Gadar 2 would trend well and had to tell his actor father Dharmendra that he was not "drunk" but simply too overwhelmed.

When Sunny Deol roars, the audience listens. The actor on Monday celebrated the success of his latest film Gadar 2 and said he is humbled by the love coming the team’s way. Gadar 2 released on Friday and recorded a whopping Rs 134 crore over the weekend.

Directed by Anil Sharma and written by Shaktimaan Talwar, Gadar 2 is a sequel to the 2001 film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which starred Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma, who reprise their roles in the latest film.

At the success press event, Sunny opened up about the success of the film and began by thanking the audience. “Tara Singh ko aapne phir se zinda kar diya (You have made Tara Singh come alive),” he said amid cheers.

The actor said he was extremely nervous for Gadar 2 because the first installment was such an iconic film and was scared to “ruin” it by revamping it. But when the team narrated him the story, he saw potential in the idea of a sequel. “And the rest, as they say is history.”

Sunny Deol said a day before the film’s release he was a bundle of nerves, but things started looking up when he was told how Gadar 2 was gearing to take the box office by storm. When the picture got clearer, Sunny said he could not stop laughing and crying and had to tell his actor father Dharmendra that he was not drunk.

“When I got to know how the film is going to trend… Actually, I was very stressed before the release, like everyone is. I have always walked on the path of honesty which is also the toughest path because you’re all alone. But then the victory is also the sweetest. So when the film opened, I felt God within me. The entire evening, I kept crying, laughing. I met my father and told him, ‘Dad I’m not drunk! But I’m happy, I’ve gone mad with happiness.’ Main nikla gaddi leke, ek mod aaya, utthey mere naal mera rab aagaya,'” he added.

The actor, however, also lashed out at the division people make of cinema watching audience. Clubbing films like Gadar 2 as a movie catering to only “mass” section reeks of elitism, Sunny noted, and should not be the case at all as everyone is simply “public”.

“I promise all my fans that I’m only going to make good films like these. They say films for ‘masses’. What do you mean by that word?! Public is public and that means everyone. Aap usko mass bolke neeche kar rahe ho? Aap bade ho? Aapko sa***n ko akkal nahi hai jo apne aap ko alag karta hai, usko samajh nahi hai hindustan kya hai. Understand our country, understand our home.

“We must work on ourselves, work on our talent. We had a lot of talent, the world stole from us and has reached places. Don’t ape them, we have our own talent, let’s make something of our own. People tell me, ‘Let’s do a scene like that and I am like why? Can’t we think of something new?’ That’s the way it should be,” he added.

With a strong hold on Monday and a major push on Tuesday on account of Independence Day holiday, Gadar 2 is set to enter the Rs 200 crore club with ease and record a historic collection, much like how the first part had done more than 20 years ago. “Gadar had done such tremendous business, it is important to come near it, nahi toh Gadar ki izzat nahi rahegi,” Sunny said.

Gadar 2, which clashed with Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, will now challenge the lifetime total of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which remains as the biggest Bollywood hit with collections of Rs 524 crore (Hindi) nett.
