Shilpa Shetty starred in numerous popular films in the ’90s, but she was not considered among the top actors of that era. However, her career trajectory took a significant turn when she participated in the British reality TV show Big Brother in 2007, ultimately winning the season. During a conversation with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Shilpa spoke about her journey, highlighting how, after feeling under-appreciated by the Indian film industry, she found poetic justice after winning Big Brother and receiving worldwide acclaim

Reflecting on her Big Brother victory, Shilpa said, “More than the films, I was able to break the mould by participating in Big Brother. I think I got poetic justice there. There were many actors with many hit films that have not gotten the kind of fame or adulation that I got worldwide when I won that show. Actors get adulation for the characters that they play, but after Big Brother I got the love for being me. That was an absolute game changer for me. My life changed after that.”

Shilpa also shared how the reality show transformed her into a stronger and more independent individual, reducing her reliance on her parents. She said, “It was very tough for me because I was protected until then. My mom would always travel with me on outdoor shoots. My dad kept this condition that my mom will always travel with me to work. So, I was always timid in my personal life and up until I did Big Brother, I was very much dependent on my parents. I didn’t even have a credit card till two years before I went into the Big Brother house. It taught me to become independent.”

Shilpa is set to return to the silver screen with Sukhee. In the film, she portrays the role of a confined housewife who takes a break from her responsibilities after reuniting with her friends. Sukhee also stars Amit Sadh, Chaitanya Chaudhary, Kiran Kumar and Kusha Kapila in significant roles. Directed by Sonal Joshi, the film is scheduled for release in theatres on September 22.
