Shekhar Kapur, who is still known for making the 1987 film Mr India, recently opened up about the making of the film and recalled a few anecdotes from the set. In a candid chat, Shekhar said that the famous scene where Sridevi’s character starts running around her room because she is being chased by a cockroach, actually left him and cinematographer Baba Azmi wondering how they would make the cockroach ‘act’ so they came up with a unique solution.

Talking to Daily Post, Shekhar said that they decided to pour some rum in front of the cockroach and thought the insect was drunk in that scene. “Me and Baba Azmi, we were thinking how to get the cockroach to act? We thought let’s get a bottle of Old Monk rum… We poured a little bit in front of the cockroach… We thought it will drink and act (laughs). We actually felt like the cockroach had gotten drunk… Maybe the cockroach liked old monk?” he said.

Shekhar also recalled another anecdote from the film’s making where he recalled telling Amrish Puri, who played Mogambo, to act like he was doing Shakespeare for kids who had never been exposed to the works of the playwright. “When Amrish asked ‘how do you want me to play it?’ I said ‘play it like you are doing Shakespeare’. He was shocked. I said ‘you are doing Shakespeare for kids who have never even heard of Shakespeare, and village kids who have never come to the city.’ He did it that way,” he said.
