Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have been regarded as one of the most beloved on-screen pairs of all time, they also enjoy a strong bond in real life. Whenever they appear together, they never fail to bring joy to the audience by seizing every chance to playfully tease each other or express their affection.
Even though Abbas–Mustan’s Baazigar was their first film, it is Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge that holds a unique place in the hearts of movie enthusiasts. The film stands out as an immensely celebrated romantic masterpiece in the history of Indian cinema.
The filming of DDLJ posed its challenges, with Yash Chopra as the producer, as the lead actors found it difficult to maintain composure and would often break into laughter at unexpected moments.
During an earlier interview, both SRK and Kajol spoke candidly about the extensive efforts it took to film a brief scene in DDLJ, revealing that it required more than 17 takes and three camera magazines.
The scene in question is the one where Simran (Kajol) wakes up after a drunken night in Raj’s (SRK) bed. To trick her into believing they spent the night together, Raj shows her some lipstick marks on his chest.
“Right from the beginning of filming that scene, we found it incredibly funny. Surprisingly, when we attempted to film it seriously, it became even more comical. Adding to the hilarity, the shirt I wore had a zipper that made a strange sound whenever I opened it, making us burst into laughter even more. Though similar incidents occurred during other scenes too, this one was exceptionally funny,” Shah Rukh Khan told NDTV.
Kajol clarified that there was nothing technically wrong with the zipper and that they simply found it “unnecessarily funny”.
“It took us three magazines to shoot that scene. Adi was so angry,” she added. Shah Rukh revealed even Yash Chopra got upset and “started shouting”. He said that even today if one looks closely, one can see him and Kajol smiling a bit through their eyes.
DDLJ marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra, son of veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra, known as the King of Romance in Hindi cinema. The 1995 film, also starring the late Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal and Anupam Kher, released at a time when India had opened up to liberalisation.
