Actor Shah Rukh Khan is reportedly planning to add two new floors to his Mumbai mansion, Mannat. The landmark residence currently has two basements, a ground floor, and six additional floors. According to a Hindustan Times report, the actor’s wife, Gauri Khan, has filed an application with the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), seeking to add two additional floors to the residence, adding another 616.02 sq. metres of area.

According to the report, the estimated cost of the project is Rs 25 crore. A committee headed by principal secretary (environment) Pravin Darade will decide on Gauri Khan’s application on Wednesday. The application was filed on November 9. Mannat was previously known as Villa Vienna. Shah Rukh Khan filmed a scene for the movie Yes Boss at Bandstand, and developed a fondness for the heritage building, built in 1914 by Nariman K Dubash. He purchased the property in 2001. Because of its Grade Three heritage status, he wasn’t allowed to make many adjustments to it. He built the six-storey structure known as Mannat Annexe behind it.

Shah Rukh reflected on buying the property at an event for Gauri’s coffee table book some years ago. “We didn’t have too much money, and as soon as we mustered up some money, we said we want to buy this bungalow. And it was way beyond our means. We managed to buy it, which was one thing, and then we had to rebuild it, because it was quite dilapidated. And then we didn’t have money to furnish it. Of course, we called a designer. The lunch that he served us telling us how he’ll design the house was way more than the salary I used to earn in a month,” he said.

Actor Mukesh Khanna told a story about Shah Rukh requesting full payment in advance from one of his producers, because he wanted to buy the house. “Shah Rukh was going to buy a house at that time, I have been told. He requested Prem Lalwani (producer) that you please pay me in advance, I want to buy a house. In those days, one could buy a house in Rs 34-35 lakh. The first house that Shah Rukh bought was purchased because of the money he made on Guddu. Lalwani did a very nice gesture and he gave Shah Rukh full payment in advance. Shah Rukh used to say that I have a house because of this film,” Khanna said on his YouTube channel.

Mannat is now a popular tourist destination in Mumbai, with thousands of fans gathering outside it on the actor’s birthday, and on the occasion of Eid. Shah Rukh is known to stand in an enclosure and wave to his admirers.
