Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who courted trouble over his previous Hindi film Kabir Singh, is gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor. The film’s trailer unveils a toxic world intertwined with the strained relationship between Ranbir’s character, Arjun Singh, and his father Balbir Singh, portrayed by Anil Kapoor.

Vanga has now expressed that the definition of toxicity varies from person to person and said that it is influenced by individual perspectives on a story and its characters. He said in an interview with The Hindu, “I did not face much criticism for Arjun Reddy, but it was different for Kabir Singh. I don’t want to name anyone but I saw a few people debating about Kabir Singh to get publicity before the release of their own films. A leading producer-director said he was scared to admit liking Kabir Singh. People acted as though I had made a film on the lines of the French film Irreversible. That film left me disturbed for days, though I could also see the artistic side of it.”

Talking about Animal, Vanga expressed satisfaction with its A certificate, indicating it’s intended for audiences aged 18 and above. He mentioned he won’t be taking his son Arjun or younger family members to watch the film in theaters.

Vanga also opened up about the length of the movie and said, “The first cut of Animal was 3 hours 45 or 46 minutes. I chopped till 3:21. I have seen the film multiple times and it is an engaging film. Ranbir is a great performer and will not let the audience relax for a second. My job is done when the producer is confident of getting his money back with some profit.”

The filmmaker said that he cannot predict if the film will make Rs 800 crores or Rs 1000 crores and added, “But I can confidently say that the film will move, titillate and make the audience think. There are times when a short film of five or 10 minutes duration left me bored. There are three-hour films that have kept me glued.”

Animal also stars Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna in pivotal roles. The film will be released in theatres on December 1.
