Veteran actress Saira Banu commemorated a deeply emotional occasion on October 2 by sharing unseen photos from her engagement ceremony with her late husband, legendary actor Dilip Kumar. On the couple’s 58th engagement anniversary, Saira took to social media to express her undying love for the late icon through a poignant and emotional note, paying tribute to their enduring bond.
The actor posted the nostalgic photos along with a touching message, reflecting on their journey together that began on this day in 1966. Saira reminisced about the love and faith that defined her relationship with Dilip Kumar, highlighting how she never questioned the highs, lows, or still moments throughout their time together.
She added, “I simply loved. For love, you see, is the foundation upon which everything else stands. It frees you from any burdens, doubts, or expectations, leaving only one thing behind, devotion. And in that devotion, one finds the true essence of love a love that is unconditional, liberating, and enduring. #EngagementDay.”
Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar tied the knot on October 11, 1966, when she was 22 and he was 44. Their marriage spanned five decades until Dilip’s passing on July 7, 2021. Dilip fell in love with Saira at her 22nd birthday party. In his memoir, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, he recalled the moment he first saw her in a brocade sari, instantly falling head over heels in love with her.
He wrote, “When I alighted from my car and entered the beautiful garden that leads to the house, I can still recall my eyes falling on Saira standing in the foyer of her new house looking breathtakingly beautiful in a brocade sari. I was taken aback, because she was no longer the young girl I had consciously avoided working with because I thought she would look too young to be my heroine. She had indeed grown to full womanhood and was in reality more beautiful than I thought she was. I simply stepped forward and shook her hand and for us, time stood still.” Shortly after, Dilip proposed to Saira.
Dilip also married Asma Rehman in 1981, a marriage that lasted only two years. In his autobiography, he called his second marriage a ‘grave mistake’.
