Deepak Tijori was the best friend we all need in films like Aashiqui and Sadak. However, while these films got him recognition, they also limited him to side roles and supporting characters, which eventually impacted his career, maybe not giving him the opportunities he needed to showcase his talent. In a recent interview, the 63-year-old actor spoke how he is not the only actor who has been typecast and lost chances to show their talent.
Comparing his journey with that of legendary actor-comedian Mehmood, Deepak told Mirchi Plus, “I am not the only actor who has been typecast. I think even the legendary actor Mehmood went through the same phase. He got stuck in the kind of roles he played.”
Mehmood proved to be the only actor providing comic relief in the midst of the heavy drama prevalent in films of the 60s and 70s. But, the actor couldn’t strike out beyond comedy.
Speaking about actors from his own time, Deepak said, “The only person who could escape being typecast from my era is I think Saif Ali Khan. He made through it. But, Arshad Warsi is still stuck somewhere in the kind of roles he does. I like them both, they are amazing actors and friends. Saif could escape the situation because Farhan’s film lifted him. Until then he was stuck with films like Mai Khiladi Tu Anaari.”
In 2001, Saif Ali Khan starred in Farhan Akhtar’s film Dil Chahta Hai also starring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia among others. The film proved to be a major commercial success in metropolitan areas and received widespread critical acclaim.
Meanwhile, Deepak Tijori starred in supporting roles in several films over the years with Tippsy being his latest film. He is actor, director, and writer of the film.
Previously, Deepak had recalled how he was cast as the main lead in a film, which Mukesh Bhatt refused to produce. That was his once chance to get out of being typecast as “lead’s best friend.”
In an interview with Radio Nasha, Deepak said, “There was a film which Mahesh Bhatt started. We were done with the photo shoot, and it was decided that I was leading in the film. But, at that time, his brother Mukesh Bhatt, who is a hardcore producer and extremely practical man, said, ‘Deepak cannot be the hero, I won’t back the film. You take him as a supporting actor.’ Not like he had a personal grudge against me. The film was eventually scrapped as Mahesh Bhatt didn’t replace me. He saw me in a character.”
The film was titled Adhure Log.
