It is a meeting of reel and real, history and current, as actor couple Pratik Gandhi and Bhamini Oza will star together in filmmaker Hansal Mehta‘s new series Gandhi. While Pratik was on-board to play the titular role of Mahatma Gandhi, makers on Friday announced that Bhamini will portray his wife, Kasturba Gandhi.
The announcement of the Applause Entertainment’s series was made on the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi. Bhamini, who has been married to Pratik since 2008, said stepping into Kasturba Gandhi’s shoes feels like a “beautiful twist of fate in my acting journey.” The series would mark the first on-screen pairing of the couple.
“Working with Hansal Mehta and the Applause Entertainment team is a dream come true, especially alongside my husband Pratik. From our early theatre days, we’ve dreamed of sharing the screen together, and now it’s finally happening. My attempt is to bring honesty to the character and a genuine connection to the story,” she said in a statement.

Sameer Nair, Managing Director, Applause Entertainment, said the decision to cast real-life couple Pratik and Bhamini in the roles adds a “unique layer of authenticity” to the series. “Their shared understanding brings an unparalleled depth of realism to the portrayal of these legendary characters,” he said.
Hansal Mehta added how Bhamini is a “terrific actor” who is “formidable” on stage. “To showcase her playing the character of a lifetime is truly a privilege. Kastur is special and to discover her through Bhamini’s performance is even more special,” the filmmaker said.
Gandhi is currently in the filming stage, with makers hoping to wrap it up in the next few months.
