Ranjeet says Raj Kapoor used to ‘make Mera Naam Joker heroine sit on his lap while narrating the scenes’
Actor-director Ranjeet recently revealed veteran filmmaker Raj Kapoor told him that he made Mera Naam Joker heroine sit on his lap to explain scenes.

Ranjeet is an actor we love to hate, thanks to the many characters he played onscreen! In a career spanning several decades, he has played villains in numerous films and is counted among the OG bad guys in Bollywood. In a recent interview with ANI, the actor recalled meeting veteran actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor for the first time, in his studio. “When I entered the studio, I saw life-size cut-outs of all the actresses who starred in his (Kapoor’s) films,” he said.
The Sharmeelee actor said Raj Kapoor spoke in a similar fashion onscreen as he did in real life. “The minute he entered, he was like, ‘Sorry Goli ji!’ He was an extremely good-looking man. He had a fair complexion, and his cheeks were red. He had light eyes,” said Ranjeet while remembering his meeting with the veteran filmmaker.

Ranjeet also spoke about a revelation that the Mera Naan Joker actor made during their conversation. “Mera Naam Joker picture thi na… uski heroine,” Ranjeet reminisced, referring to the time Kapoor showed him an album from those days. He continued, “He told us, ‘Mera Naam Joker ki heroine ko god mein bithakar scene samjhaaya hai (I made them sit on my lap and narrated the scenes). He wasn’t being flirtatious while doing so. He would call the actress ‘putar’ (daughter) when he asked her to sit on his lap.”
Helmed by Kapoor himself, who also portrayed the titular character, Mera Naam Joker featured Simi Garewal, Rishi Kapoor, Kseniya Ryabinkina, Padmini, Manoj Kumar and Dharmendra in key roles.
Last year, in an interview with Radio Nasha, Ranjeet recounted the time when his family disapproved of his career choices and even went to the extent of throwing him out of the house. The actor had to enlist the help of his co-star Rakhee to speak to his mother on his behalf. Ranjeet portrayed a negative role in the 1971 film Sharmeelee. In one particular scene, his character is shown assaulting Rakhee’s character. Witnessing this, Ranjeet’s family walked out of the theatre and later demanded that the actor vacate the house. Reflecting on the incident, he recalled in Hindi, “My mother said, ‘How dare you enter this house? You tear women’s clothes, what kind of work is this?’ She told me to get out of the house.”
