Ranbir Kapoor says John Abraham was supposed to do Rockstar before him, Imtiaz Ali offered him a film on marketing
Ranbir Kapoor recently shared that John Abraham was supposed to do Rockstar before him but it got shelved.

Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in Rockstar is often termed as one of his best performances of his career but not many people know that years before Ranbir got attached to the project, John Abraham was once supposed to play Jordan. Ranbir, in a recent virtual fan interaction, revealed that when Imtiaz initially met with him for a film, it wasn’t Rockstar, but a film about “marketing.”
Ranbir shared the “funny story” and said, “When Imtiaz came to me, he offered me some other film, which was something about marketing. And I remembered that before I became an actor, I had heard that John Abraham was doing Rockstar but that did not happen and it got shelved, I don’t know for what reason.”
The Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar actor said that he reminded Imtiaz of Rockstar and asked what happened to that film. “So he said that the guy who wrote the story for Rockstar, he himself wanted to direct and act in it so for that reason he did not make the film. Anyway we decided to part ways and three months later, he told me that he spoke that guy. So that’s how Rockstar happened,” he recalled.
Rockstar’s story credit was shared with Muazzam Beg. In a 2011 interview with Hindustan Times, Imtiaz said that his refurbished version of the script did not include much of Muazzam Beg’s version. “There is only one point of his story that’s been used this time, and he will be given a much bigger credit than he deserves,” he said.
In the same interview, Imtiaz had also mentioned that he replaced John because his new version of the protagonist was a much younger character. “When I took up the film again after the first attempt, I changed the character. I had started off with John, but now, as the story has changed, he was not required. The protagonist is now a Jat from Delhi, and much younger than the previous character,” he said.
Rockstar also starred Nargis Fakhri.
