After the release of Hrithik Roshan’s debut film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan was starting to enjoying the success of the film but just a week later, he was shot in the middle of the day on the streets of Mumbai as he got out of his office. The attack was orchestrated by members of the underworld who were threatening him. In the recent Netflix documentary series The Roshans, Rakesh revisited the time he was shot but did not delve deeper into the story. However, in a recent interview, Rakesh recalled that incident in detail and said that he was in shock and did not even realise that he was shot until much later.

Talking to Zoom, Rakesh said that after the shooting incident, his driver was shivering in fear so they quickly got out of there and pulled up in one of the lanes. “I asked him to catch his breath. Until then, I didn’t even realise that I was shot. Then we headed to the police station because I suspected that the shooters might be nearby, and they might get caught,” he recalled. Rakesh said that at this point, he could feel his shirt being a little wet, and after a few minutes, he noticed that blood was oozing out of it so he tried to stop the bleeding with a handkerchief. “Then I got to the police station, filed a complaint and the police took me to the hospital in their jeep,” he shared.

Rakesh said that he called his father-in-law J Om Prakash after he reached the hospital so he could inform the family, and his next call was to son Hrithik Roshan. He shared, “I called Hrithik. He was at Yash Chopra’s house. I told him ‘Duggu, don’t leave the house. Your grandfather will call you, you come with him’.” Rakesh said that he tried to stay calm after his surgery because he knew that if he panicked, the family would also panic so he decided to put up a brave front. “Even after I got discharged, I used to get calls from there (the underworld). And I would speak to them. Sometimes I spoke to them in such a way that my friends, who were sitting with me, would ask ‘aren’t you scared?’ I said no,” he recalled.

Rakesh said that after the incident, he continued to get calls threatening Hrithik. “I would get calls that your son is shooting on location for Mission Kashmir, and you will get a terrible news tomorrow. I said ‘let it come’. I told Hrithik ‘don’t be scared’.”

In an earlier chat with Bollywood Hungama, Rakesh had shared that underworld criminals wanted Hrithik to work in a film that would be financed by them. Since Rakesh refused to do as told, he was shot.
