Rajkumar Hirani says he loved Hum Aapke Hain Koun even though it doesn’t have a story, wants Sooraj Barjatya to remake Sanju
Rajkumar Hirani shared that he loved watching Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun even before he became a director.

Rajkumar Hirani and Sooraj Barjatya are two of the most successful filmmakers in Hindi cinema. While Hirani is known for making films with a strong social message, Barjatya is known for making family entertainers. In a recent interview, when Hirani was asked if he could remake one of Barjatya’s films, and vice-versa, which films he would choose.
Hirani then spoke about Hum Aapke Hain Koun and said the film didn’t really have a story but it kept him engaged throughout. Calling the feat “unbelievable”, he told Komal Nahta on his YouTube channel Game Changers, “I really don’t know if we will ever remake each other’s films but I really love his film Hum Aapke Hain Koun. When I watched it for the first time I was not into filmmaking yet, but later when I got into the profession, I realised the film carries no story as such. The conflict happens only at the end, but yet the fact that he kept you engaged the whole time, it was unbelievable. He pulled it off without any huge story.”
He added that if Barjatya was to remake one of his films, he would choose Sanju. “If ever he chooses to remake any of my films, I think it should be Sanju because he will turn it into something else altogether.” The filmmaker laughed as he said this.
In the same conversation, Hirani also talked about the accusations that he made Sanju to “whitewash” Sanjay Dutt’s image. He recalled an incident where he was asked the same and said, “During an interview once, I was asked if I made Sanju to whitewash Sanjay Dutt’s image. I was like, ‘What is your problem with him?’ He said, ‘He kept the gun with him’. I was like, ‘So, we have shown him keeping the gun. We even showed how he called his friend to throw it in the water and destroy it. We also showed he was a drug addict. We even showed he slept with his best friend’s girlfriend. We also showed he was a brat. What is that you think I have not shown to whitewash his image? People developed a perception based on what they have read about him around. Nobody knows him first hand.”
Rajkumar Hirani is yet to announce his next directorial. His previous film, Dunki, starred Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles.
