Director Raj Kumar Gupta’s crime thriller Raid 2, starring Ajay Devgn, scored an impressive extended opening weekend. It crossed the Rs 70 crore mark in four days, performing better than other recent tentpoles such as Akshay Kumar’s Kesari 2, the Sunny Deol-starrer Jaat, and Salman Khan’s Sikandar. However, the film couldn’t pass the crucial Monday test.
Raid 2 managed to collect only Rs 7.75 crore on its first Monday, which is a massive drop from the earnings on Sunday. With Rs 22 crore, Raid 2 clocked in its highest single-day collection on Sunday. That was an improvement over Saturday’s collection of Rs 18 crore, and the opening day earnings of Rs 19.25 crore.
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Raid 2 more than made up for the dip on Friday (Rs 12 crore) with its decent weekend collection. However, even on Friday, the earnings never dropped down to single digits. That happened on Monday, with the total domestic box office collection of Raid 2 now standing at Rs 79 crore.
It’s yet to be seen whether Raid 2 will manage to enter the Rs 100 crore club. Devgn’s roll with sequels began with Abhishek Pathak’s 2022 crime thriller Drishaym 2, which earned Rs 239.67 crore at the domestic box office. He’ll soon be seen in a couple of more sequels — Son of Sardar 2 and De De Pyaar De 2.
Starting this Friday, Raid 2 will face fresh competition from Karan Sharma’s romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. While that’s a smaller film, it combines the forces of lead actor Rajkummar Rao and producer Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films, who delivered Hindi cinema’s biggest blockbuster, Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy Stree 2, last year.
Raid 2 is the sequel to the 2018 hit Raid, which featured Devgn in the role of IRS officer Amay Patnaik. It was also directed by Gupta. Raid also starred Saurabh Shukla and Ileana D’Cruz. It was inspired by a real-life raid conducted by Income Tax Department officers in the 1980s.
In the sequel, Vaani Kapoor replaces Ileana as Devgn’s wife. The film also stars Rajat Kapoor as the IT Commissioner, alongside Supriya Pathak, Amit Sial and Saurabh Shukla. The trailer shows Devgn returning as the fearless IRS officer, who takes on the corrupt system once again. This time, he faces off against a dangerous politician, played by Riteish Deshmukh.
