Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Inspector Jatil Yadav is back, and this time with a new twisted case. The makers have unveiled the teaser of Netflix’s Raat Akeli Hai sequel –  Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders – which sees Nawaz’s Inspector Jatil Yadav solving another mysterious case. Along with Nawaz, Radhika Apte is also reprising her role of Radha in the film. It also stars Chitrangada Singh, Rajat Kapoor, Revathi, Deepti Naval and Sanjay Kapoor.

The teaser begins with a voice-over sharing details of the Bansal family murder case, revealing how the whole family was killed in one night. The case lands with Jatil Yadav, with his boss, played by Rajat Kapoor, pressing him for a quick investigation. Following scenes show a religious group praying, with a bald-headed Deepti Naval playing the leader of the group. Chitrangada Singh, who appears to have been in the house on the night of the murder, agrees to answer all police questions. Meanwhile, Sanjay Kapoor asks Nawaz to “look inside the house”. Nawaz is also warned not to go deep into the case. Radhika calls it a “horrifying case”, while fingers point at the remaining members of the Bansal family for hiding secrets.

Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders had its world premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa. Like the previous film, the Raat Akeli Hai sequel is also directed by Honey Trehan. It is set to release on Netflix on 19 December.

In a recent interaction with SCREEN, screenwriter Smita Singh shared details of the sequel and said, “The original movie was about a family and an inspector at a small police station who is investigating a case. But this time the stakes are much higher. The politics is much deeper and expansive this time. With the first movie I was trying to tell a home-grown police detective story. This time we have everything — forensic and eyewitnesses. But the one thing that stays solid is the stubbornness to go after the truth.”

During the same interaction, director Honey Trehan admitted that since the first film was called slow by many, he has tried to make the sequel fast-paced. “Treatment-wise this is more contemporary. People said the first one was slow-paced, we have tried to fix that,” he said.
