MS Dhoni biopic director Neeraj Pandey is not a Dhoni fan and there is a reason
Sushant Singh Rajput was the first choice of M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story director Neeraj Pandey.
Neeraj Pandey said not being a Dhoni fan helped him remain unbiased while directing the film.
Who isn’t a fan of Mahendra Singh Dhoni? There are a few and surprisingly the list also includes Neeraj Pandey, the man who has directed the cricketer’s biopic, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story. But he is not a Dhoni follower!
Neeraj revealed that although he likes cricket and Dhoni as a player, he has never been his fan as such. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Neeraj said, “I am not a fan of Dhoni. I like AB De Villers and Sachin Tendulkar. But I am not a fan of these players as well. Dhoni also knows that I am not his fan.”

Explaining his reasons for not being a fan, Neeraj said, “To put things in perspective, had I been a fan of Dhoni, I wouldn’t have been able to direct the movie in an unbiased fashion. Because I am not a fan, I could remain objective.”
The director who chose Sushant Singh Rajput to play Dhoni was all praise for the actor. “Sushant was always my first choice. He comes from the same place as that of Dhoni. So he understands the dialect well. He is a keen observer of the game of cricket and above all, he is a brilliant actor.”
The film explores the life of Dhoni during his struggling days, before he bacame the captain of the Indian cricket team.
For Neeraj directing a biopic was no different from all the other genres he has successfully tried his hand at till now. “Genres are not challenging to me. Stories are and telling that story in the best possible manner is what I focus on.”
While the biopic will also see other popular cricketers apart from Dhoni, Neeraj refused to reveal the names and suggested that one should wait for the movie to find out.
Neeraj also dismissed talks of the film taking digs at Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman and suggested one shouldn’t draw conclusions based on what one thinks the trailer possibly indicates.
