For a survival thriller like Mission Raniganj, it’s no mystery where the film is heading at the box office. The Akshay Kumar starrer has had a disastrous start at the ticket window and according to industry tracker Sacnilk, Mission Raniganj has clocked an opening weekend of merely Rs 12.15 cr.

Mission Raniganj opened at Rs 2.8 cr and saw a growth of 60 percent on Saturday when the collections jumped to Rs 4.50 cr. But Sunday, when the collections should have seen a further fillip, recorded only Rs 4.80 cr as per early estimates. Sunday also saw India playing Australia in an ICC World Cup match that could have impacted box office.

Mission Raniganj had an overall 18 percent occupancy on Sunday, a shockingly low figure which pretty much sets the film for a lifetime wrap up of around Rs 20 cr. The film is just marginally ahead of Akshay Kumar’s Selfiee, which had opened at Rs 2.55 cr and had a weekend of Rs 10.30 cr.

Post pandemic, with the exception of Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi and the recently released OMG 2, Akshay Kumar has been struggling at the box office. While Selfiee remains his poorest scorer—with lifetime collections around Rs 16 cr—all his other ventures, from big scale to mid size films also met with similar fate.

Mission Raniganj is the last release of the year for Akshay Kumar, who would hope to have a better 2024 with films like Soorarai Pottru remake, Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Sky Force and Welcome to the Jungle.

Also starring Parineeti Chopra, Mission Raniganj is based on the incident in West Bengal’s coal minery, where 65 mine workers were rescued after a flood. The film is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and backed by Pooja Entertainment.
