Actor Manoj Bajpayee‘s recent film Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, has opened to positive reviews adding to his already strong body of work in cinema over the years. While the National Award-winning actor has given some memorable films, he has often said that he consciously tries to stay away from the ecosystem of being a ‘star’.

In an interview with Aaj Tak, the actor opened up about his financial status and how he is still standing at the periphery of mainstream cinema and hasn’t become a part of it. The actor was promoting his film Bandaa when he was told that Google search shows his net worth to be Rs 170 crore.

Upon hearing this, the actor gave a shocked reaction and said, “Baap re baap! Aligarh aur Gali Guleiyan kar ke? Bilkul nahi hai par haan itna zaroor hai bhagwan ki daya se ki mera aur meri patni ka budhapa ache se guzar jayega aur meri beti set ho jayegi (Oh my God! By doing films like Aligarh and Gali Guleiyan? Absolutely not! But I have enough to have a comfortable old age for me and my wife and my daughter will be set).”

In the same interview, Manoj was asked how has his journey been from Bettiah, Bihar to Mumbai’s posh South Bombay residential areas. To this, the actor quickly clarified that he doesn’t live in a posh locality of Mumbai but a humble suburb.

Main South Mumbai ka nahi hun, na Bandra ka hun. Main abhi bhi Lokhandwala, Andheri mein rehta hun and main humesha kehta hun ke main cinema, iss film industry ke beech mein nahi hun. Maine ye choose kiya tha ki main film industry ki boundary pe baitha hun. Ye mera chunav raha hai (I am not from South Mumbai or Bandra. I still live in Lokhandwala, Andheri and I have always said that I am not in the middle of this film industry but standing at it’s boundary. It is a choice I have made),” said Manoj.

The actor, whose films include Aarakshan, Gangs of Wasseypur, Naam Shabana amongst others, says that he doesn’t relate with the lifestyle of the those who live in these rich localities of the city.

“Main wo relate nahi kar pata hun. What do I do, I have come from a village. I have taken this journey and reached the periphery of the industry. To go inside the industry I will have to become like them and that requires a lot of strength. Now, after these many years, I don’t think I can be anyone else.”
