Manoj Bajpayee’s wife Shabana, professionally known as Neha Bajpai, was also an actress until 2009 when she stopped starring in films altogether. She had marked her debut with the 1998 film Kareeb opposite Bobby Deol. In her upcoming films, she starred against actors like Hrithik Roshan in Fiza, Ajay Devgn in Pyaar Ki Jeet and Prabhu Deva in Tamil film Alli Thandha Vaanam. In her career, she also shared screen with Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar, Irrfan Khan, Fardeen Khan, Dino Morea and Aftab Shivdasani among others. But after the 2009 film, Acid Factory, she was nowhere to be seen. By this time, she was married to Manoj Bajpayee.
After almost 15 years of gap from acting, her husband opened up about the reason behind her absence from films. Speaking to Mid-Day, Manoj Bajpayee said, “She didn’t quit films, she stopped getting work for some reason. Too many politics here and there. She is also an outsider and didn’t have any mentor.”
He added, “Because she was so new, she didn’t know if the action was appropriate. She thought this is the way how filmmakers behave. She must have thought they are all mad genuises, they are capable of doing anything they want.”
Shabana’s debut film, Kareeb, was with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film, however, didn’t work at the box office.
In a 2001 interview with Filmfare, Bobby Deol recalled the incident and said Vidhu Vinod Chopra who “discovered” Shabana in Delhi gave her a tough time. “He would constantly yell at her.” He shared, “For one scene, Neha had to come down the mountain and give me her left hand. But she kept getting confused. When she couldn’t get this right after repeated takes, Vidhu asked her to bite her right hand. She did but she still got it wrong in the next take. After 20 takes, Vidhu lost his cool. And you know what he did? He bit her right hand. I was too shocked to react.”
