14 years after making her directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Dhobi Ghat, Kiran Rao is set to return to the silver screen, once again donning the filmmaker's hat. Bankrolled jointly by her former husband Aamir Khan's banner Aamir Khan Production and her own venture Kindling Productions, the film titled Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) will hit screens across the country on January 5, 2024. Providing a sneak peek into the film's world, the makers unveiled Laapataa Ladies' official teaser on Friday. The promo video assures audiences that the film will offer an entertaining and thought-provoking experience. The teaser commences by introducing us to a young man, Deepak Kumar, who, along with his newlywed wife, embarks on a journey in their wedding attire on a train. However, it swiftly transitions to a scene where Deepak finds himself at a police station, just three days after tying the knot, reporting his wife's disappearance. Notably, the teaser also depicts another man approaching the police station with a similar complaint about his missing wife. The teaser intriguingly highlights the perplexity of the police officers as they grapple with the puzzling situation of two newlywed women vanishing from the same train. Describing the film's story and tone, the makers mentioned that Laapataa Ladies is set in 2001, somewhere in rural India, and is about the delightful adventures of two young brides who get accidentally swapped on a train. Amidst the chaos, the two encounter a plethora of colourful characters, resulting in hilarious and unexpected consequences. Starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan in the lead roles, the comedy-drama will also be screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8, well ahead of its release. The film's screenplay has been penned by Sneha Desai, based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The additional dialogues have been written by Divyanidhi Sharma. Laapataa Ladies is the first collaboration of Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan since they announced their separation in 2021. Rao and Khan have remained close friends. Though the movie was supposed to hit screens on March 3, 2023, the makers postponed it indefinitely until now.
