Laapataa Ladies out of Oscars 2025 race, Aamir Khan Productions reacts: ‘This is not the end…’
Kiran Rao directorial Laapataa Ladies was India's official Oscar entry. The film, however, was not shortlisted for nominations.

Hours after Laapataa Ladies was not shortlisted for the Academy Awards, the makers of the film, Aamir Khan Productons, shared a statement, expressing disappointment. In a long statement, the production house also expressed their gratefulness to FFI jury for considering them.
In a statement they wrote, “Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) did not make it to the Academy Awards shortlist this year, and we are of course disappointed, but equally we are immensely grateful for the incredible support and belief we’ve received throughout this journey.”
They added, “We at Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios and Kindling Productions extend our gratitude to the Academy members and the FFI jury for considering our film. To be included in this prestigious process alongside some of the finest films from across the world is an honor in itself. Our heartfelt thanks to all the audiences around the world who have expressed their love and support for our film.”
The team also congratulated the other 15 films that were shortlisted.
The Academy Awards shared the shortlisted films in 10 categories on Wednesday. In the International Feature Film, the organisation announced films from Brazil – I’m Still Here, Canada – Universal Language, Czech Republic – Waves, Denmark – The Girl with the Needle, France – Emilia Pérez, Germany – The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Iceland – Touch, Ireland – Kneecap, Italy – Vermiglio, Latvia – Flow, Norway – Armand, Palestine – From Ground Zero, Senegal – Dahomey, Thailand – How to Make Millions before Grandma Dies, United Kingdom – Santosh.
The only hope for India in this year’s Oscars lies in Guneet Monga’s Live Action Short Film, Anuja.
Concluding their note, AKP wrote, “For us, this is not the end but a step forward. We remain committed to bringing more powerful stories to life and sharing them with the world.” Laapataa Ladies, promotes as Lost Ladies for the Oscars, is directed by Aamir Khan’s ex-wife, Kiran Rao. The film marked the return of Kiran Rao as a director for the second time after over a decade.
The nominations for Oscars 2025 will be announced on January 17. The nominations voting will begin on January 8 and conclude on January 12. The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
