Singer Kumar Sanu recently shared his views on the remix of one of his most popular romantic numbers of the 90s, “Chura Ke Dil Mera”. The song was remixed by Anu Malik, the original composer of the track, and, was sung by Benny Dayal and Anmol Malik for Priyadarshan’s 2021 film Hungama 2. Sanu compared the remixed version of the song to dung.

While speaking to Pinkvilla, the singer said, “Producer and director think they are very intelligent. They picked Chura Ke Dil Mera to remix, aur fir usko gobar kar diya (and then ruined it). Ab vo director aur producer kitna gobbar hai, socho (Now think how bad is that director and producer). Their capacity is just this much. They can only spoil it. They can never make it better.”

The veteran singer then shared his two cents on the trend of remixes in Bollywood. He suggested if filmmakers have to remix an already popular song, they should get it done by the original singers.

Kumar Sanu opined, “If you are in dire need of a remix, get it done by the original singer. You can change the music arrangement, but get it sung by Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, me or Udit Narayan, people who can sing. The impact that will create will be 100 times more since even our fan following will listen to it. Our millions of fans would be happy to hear our voice again. But since there is gobar (dung) in your (producer and director’s) head, you won’t do it.”

Sanu is the original voice behind “Chura Ke Dil Mera” from the 1994 action comedy Main Khiladi Tu Anari. During the interview, the singer also recalled his experience of recording the song with music director Anu Malik. He revealed that Malik never encouraged singers.

“Anu Malik thoda khadoos type ka hai, kabhi encourage nahi karta hai. He only keeps discouraging. He would say, ‘Kya ho gaya tere gale mein aaj, mazaa nahi aaya (What happened to your throat, I didn’t enjoy it). I would get scared and would tell him, ‘Let’s try once more,’ and he would say, ‘Do whatever you want to do.’ After the song was done, he said, ‘Chi, Chi, kya gaaya,’ and left the room. I was confused since the director was happy. After a while, he returned and hugged and kissed me because he was happy with the song,” Sanu shared.

Kumar Sanu has been active in the Indian music industry for the past 35 years. He has sung over 21,000 songs in 26 languages.
